This adventure begins with an overnight stay in Buenos Aires, the bustling capital of Argentina. Spend the evening at your leisure discovering the ’Paris of South America’ on a warm spring or summer day. Or extend your stay with an optional support program and explore wild Patagonia.
Early in the morning you will be picked up from the hotel and taken to the airport for the flight to Ushuaia, where MS Roald Amundsen will be waiting for you. Once on board, we will begin our journey with a welcome dinner.
As we cross the famous Drake Passage, we prepare for the Antarctica adventure. On the journey south, the expedition team will begin the lecture program, which will provide you with information about the fascinating history of Antarctica and environmental science. Learn how to become an ambassador of Antarctica in our mandatory IAATO briefing and participate in the science program to learn more about Antarctica’s wildlife and ecosystems. Now is a great time to enjoy all the amenities of our advanced hybrid powered expedition vessel.
Antarctica, a remote continent where those vast plains seem to have no end and where 90% of all the ice in the world is located. In summer it is a breeding ground and food source for many animal species, which are attracted by the abundance of krill. Every journey to this continent is an expedition in itself. Even with the most advanced technology, we must be careful in charting our course and take advantage of ideal conditions when they arise. We will also attempt to make a number of landings at various spots on the South Shetlands and the Antarctic Peninsula.
The expedition team will continue the program of lectures on history and the great explorers, biology, wildlife, oceanography and climate change. Using the state-of-the-art microscopes in the ship’s science center, you can analyze samples taken during the expedition cruise to see a different kind of ”fauna” at a microscopic level. Spend some time on deck and keep an eye out for wildlife as we sail north towards the Falkland Islands. We are usually followed by various species of seabirds, such as albatrosses.
After the wilderness of Antarctica, enjoy the contrast that Stanley offers, with red telephone boxes, red buses and old pubs. The capital is well suited for wandering the streets on foot, or you can join an excursion to explore the wilderness and wildlife in the area. We will be docked here all day. The Falkland Islands are teeming with natural wonders, with fantastically clear blue skies, a stark horizon and beautiful white sand beaches. As we reach the westernmost outposts in the Falkland Islands, you will see secluded farms that have been family owned for generations. Penguins waddle along the beaches here, often coming close to look curious and even pose for pictures! The plan is to go ashore to explore the area on walks and spot some of the many bird species that inhabit it.
Days at sea are packed with activities. Our expedition team leads engaging talks and lectures in the science center and MS Roald Amundsen offers wellness facilities, as well as a swimming pool and jacuzzis.
Unfortunately, every expedition must come to an end. Today we arrive back in Ushuaia, from where the return flight to Buenos Aires takes place and you can continue your journey through South America or fly back home.
What is an unspecified cabin?
With an unspecified cabin, you book a Polar outside cabin, Arctic Superior outside cabin or Expedition Suite, but you will not be assigned your cabin number and exact cabin category until you check in on board. On board MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen this means that you will be assigned one of the cabin categories below. Please refer to the deck plan of MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen for more information. Our travel specialists can of course also provide you with an explanation of the different cabin types.
